THE GOOD:  A sense of culture and tradition that offers valuable lessons to African-American filmmakers.  Gorgeous women and handsome men who present themselves as articulate, well-dressed and convincing. The soundtracks are often wonderful, making you groove in your seat as you watch the action.  Some of the location shots are panoramic and give a real sense of the country, its people and culture. The plots are often intricate, unpredictable and downright outrageous. From adultery to black market organ trafficking, battle over royal thrones, prostitution, ancient/modern mysticism, romance and murder, you'll find it in Nollywood! Many of your favorite actors will appear in different roles and combinations, which can be a lot of fun. Overall, the actors we've come to know are very talented and versatile.

THE BAD: Low budget productions resulting in some technical issues and many of the films are painfully long (average 4 hrs run time, divided into segments) but we're coming across some films that have better editing. And what Nollywood lacks in production money, it makes up with superb acting. A huge minus for us: many of the more current movies involve wanton promiscuity, yet no one ever pulls out a condom. The Nollywood films we've seen also tend to have confusing movie titles. For reasons unknown to us, the title of each segment can be entirely different, movie titles also can change depending on where you watch them and unless you already know the order of a series, you're likely to watch the episodes out of sequence. In the spirit of clarity, we list segments in the order we've found them on YouTube and other sites.

THE CHALLENGING: Figuring out which movie segment to watch first. The dialogue can at times be difficult for a Westerner to follow, especially when the actors speak rapidly, or in native Hausa or Yoruba. After a while though, you'll become familiar with the speech patterns and follow more easily. At times the actors switch between native dialect and English; at times you'll find subtitles to help you along. The older films seem to be more child-friendly; newer films are becoming more racy and controversial. Overall, there seems to be an increasing Western influence, with some recurring sexist themes, such as the scheming female/wicked temptress/evil woman. Also, wealthy characters generally have timid black servants they treat with troubling disdain and in some movies, the "N" word is used rather liberally.
Nollywood (and Ghallywood) offer a refreshing break from the Eurocentricity and pop culture of Western Cinema. Touted as the third-largest movie industry after Hollywood and Bollywood, Nollywood is gaining in popularity and becoming more accessible to audiences worldwide. This feature reviews the best (and sometimes worst) of Nollywood films. When possible, we provide links to watch films on Youtube and other sites.
The Nollywood Reviewer, Volume 5 presents an interesting variety of films. Clicking a movie's poster or "Watch Now" button will take you to a third-party site/the first movie in its series.

Girl's Cot 1, 2 & 3: Similar to Boys Cot, but with a different plot twist. When a well-cultured girl claiming to be the vice president's daughter bunks in a local university hostel, her three gullible roommates are recruited for a life of swindling and high-stakes prostitution. Lot's of intrigue and scandal; the ladies also wear great fashions. The main criticism is that the theme music is played so constantly it becomes torturous. Four of Nollywood's most beautiful actresses headline this light and entertaining drama: the utterly flawless Genevieve Nnaji, gorgeous Ini Edo, seductive Rita Dominic and lovely Uche Jombo. Some mild sex and violence.
Boys Cot 1 & 2/Return of Boys Cot 1 & 2: Sexy Jim Iyke leads a talented ensemble in this entertaining and often humorous film. Three childhood friends reunite by chance and find they're all dissatisfied with their lots. They decide to join forces and embark on an internet scheme that will make them rich, with a surprisingly shrewd prostitute as an addendum. The problem is, one of them is a pathological liar without scruples and the rest have no clue. Also starring handsome Mike Ezurounye and hunky Nonso Diobi who does a great, angry face and some funny yelling. Uche Jombo also stars.
Life Partner 1 & 2: A young couple in love plans their wedding, only to find themselves faced with numerous challenges. Will their love survive jealousy, male insecurities, a meddling family and scandal? Some mild violence and sexual innuendo, geared for an adult audience. Pleasant to watch, has some humor moments and situations to which any married couple can relate. Starring Jim Iyke, the beautiful and talented Lilian Bach and Alex Usifo. (2004) A Simony International LTD production. Directed by Sylvester Obadigie.
